Representative Office

A representative office is an office established by a company to conduct marketing and other non-transactional operations, generally in a foreign country where a branch office or subsidiary is not warranted. Representative offices are generally easier to establish than a branch or subsidiary, as they are not used for actual business and therefore there is less incentive for them to be regulated. No minimum capital requirements and no compliances like filing tax returns or maintaining accounts etc.

Foreign companies that wish to gain market insight, exposure and a better understanding of the Hong Kong business environment before setting up a full-scaled office can look for establishing a representative office first. It is also useful for the companies who want to source goods or provide support to the customers.

All that is needed to establish a representative office in Hong Kong is the copy of certificate of the incorporation (in English or Chinese) or equivalent document. In 2 to 4 working days your representative office will be registered.
